Everyone who as no idea of why that could be should read this book: it is brilliant (also because its author is one of the most renowned manuscript scholars today and it is truly illuminating to follow his vibrant account of discovering the manuscripts as physical objects), full of knowledge and every chapter (although de Hamel seems to enjoy the early medieval manuscripts much more than the artistically refined but in terms of textual complexity/novelty somewhat boring later examples) , makes you halt, astonished, and and wonder how gripping the story of some of the oldest artifacts of cultural identity is and how curiously close it brings us to the lives and fates of people and places who might have have disappeared long ago.
